British wildcard Arthur Fery becomes Wimbledon semi-finalist as fairy tale week continues
Arthur Fery’s remarkable Wimbledon run will continue into the semi-finals, after the British wildcard beat French Open finalist Flavio Cobolli on Centre Court.
The 23-year-old produced the best Grand Slam performance of his career at SW19, combining composure and confidence to keep his dream alive in front of the raucous home crowd. He will face this year’s Roland Garros winner Alexander Zverev in Friday’s semi-final.
Fery has become only the second man to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals as a wildcard after Goran Ivanisevic in 2001.
“I've always believed in myself and believed that I could be a top player in the world,” he told reporters, post-match.

"Obviously being a semi-finalist of Wimbledon is something else.
“I've taken it match by match. I haven't looked ahead. I've just played every match as it is. Yeah, here I am.
“I felt, as I said on court, not comfortable but a bit more confident in playing someone that I'd played before on a big stage.
“Even throughout the match I felt like it was very, very close. At times he was serving really well.
"But I felt like I had always a little bit of an edge. I managed to get through the second, which was huge, and then got through the third.”
On playing in front of Queen Camilla, Fery said: “W were getting ready to come on and she came to say hello, she introduced herself to both me and Flavio.
"It's obviously an honour to play in front of her. Great to meet her. She had some really kind words to me at the end, as well. Playing in front of tennis legends and now the queen – it's special.”
Fery’s run so far has included a victory over Zizou Bergs, who arrived at Wimbledon as the reigning Eastbourne champion, after his success at Devonshire Park. Fery, himself, was beaten in the round-of-16 stage on the Sussex coast.
The gritty fightback win over Bergs set the tone for another remarkable five-set victory, from behind, against veteran Grigor Dimitrov.
Now, with a place in the Wimbledon final at stake, Fery faces one of the biggest tests of his career against Alexander Zverev.
Fery said: “Obviously I have the crowd behind me here, which is a huge help, especially on Centre Court, when you have so many people pushing me. I've been trying to use the crowd to my advantage in important moments, just to add a little pressure maybe to the opponents.
“I'll try and do that again at moments that feel right on Friday.”
