Carter completes the formalities

An unwell Mark Davis was knocked out of the Betfred.com World Snooker Championship this afternoon (Thursday).

Having felt unwell for a couple of days, the St Leonards cueman was beaten 10-2 in his first round tie against Ali Carter at The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

Trailing 8-1 after the first session last night, Davis, who reached the last 16 in 2010, was frozen out in the first frame of the second session as his opponent moved within one of victory.

Thirty-nine-year-old Davis made his first break over 30 in the match to claim frame 11 and delay the inevitable, albeit only briefly because Carter sealed victory in the next courtesy of a superb 132.

World no.17 Carter, from Essex, will take on last year’s runner-up and reigning UK Champion Judd Trump in the last 16. See tomorrow’s Hastings Observer for further details.
