Celebrating success

Hellingly Cricket Club's Annual Dinner and Award Ceremony was a resounding success as more than forty people enjoyed a superb spread at Wellshurst Golf and Country Club.

First XI Captain Paul Wheatley reported an amount of pride and satisfaction, not only in their efforts in the league, but especially in the long-awaited cup success, as Hellingly lifted the Oakshott Cup for the first time since 1986.

In the quarter final, theteam had an impressive victory over a strong Chiddingly side and then thrashed Waldron in the semi-final to set up a mouth-watering final against local rivals Herstmonceux.

In an amazing game, the final was tied and needed a replay, which Hellingly then won by a comfortable 13 runs.

Following their first season in division two, the first XI were disappointed not to have gone straight up again in to division one especially after topping the division halfway through the campaign.

However, it was not to be, as a drop in form and fortune meant settling for fourth place a good effort at the first attempt.

Hellingly second XI didn't fare so well, as after gaining promotion to division six the previous season, they were sent straight back down to division seven after a disappointing campaign, winning just one match.

Following the meal, the club's award ceremony rewarded James Wise and Rory Mullen as winners of the prestigious Ray Fowlie Awards, while Rob Pye and Robin Pellett captured the Captain's Award for the first and second XI's respectively.

Concluding the evening, Paul Wheatley looked forward to a successful season for both teams before thanking all the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes for the club.

Hellingly Cricket Club are now looking to recruit new players for the 2003 season and start winter net practice in January. Anyone interested should visit www.hellinglycc.co.uk, email [email protected] or telephone Paul Wheatley on 01323 845787.
