Charlotte makes the best of it

ENTANGLEMENT in a mass of runners at the start of her race at Alton Towers dampened Charlotte Firth's hopes of making an intended top-50 finish.

But the Worthing Harrier junior swept past around 50 rivals at the hilly "Ben Nevis" section of the course and over the last 1,000 metres to reach 65th in the under-15s on her debut in the English National Cross Country Championships.

One of 300 runners, she ran the 4K in 14min 37sec and that was the club's best finish at the Championships.

Next-best was Lauren Bourne's 13min 26 over 3k, for 149th in the field of 367 Under-13s. It was her debut, also.
