Chichester's junior athletes push Crawley all the way

Chichester's under-15s and under-13s have been in action in their first Sussex League events of the season at Broadbridge Heath.

The under-15s were out in force to finish a close second to a strong Crawley squad, at this age group one of the top teams in the south.

For the boys there was a double win for Casey Keates and Reuben Truman in the 800m, while the other middle-distance pairing of Zac Hurst and Ollie Poole had to be content with two second places in the 1,500m.

Collins Alfred led from the front in the sprints with a fine 100m win supported by Truman and Harry Salt while James Amos and Max Newton ran well in the 400m.

The four throwing events must have ranked as one of the strongest in the country for a county league.

In the hammer three of the top six athletes in the UK were in action highlighted by a 50m throw by the Crawley No1 to put him second in the UK rankings.

Chichester’s Peter Thomas and George McKay were unfazed and threw a couple on personal bests each.

And Chichester ended on a high note when McKay and Alfred scored a double win in the javelin. The girls were equally impressive with four A string victories including a double for Amy Brown – a 1.39m high jump and a new personal best of 2.30m in the pole vault.

Holly Beaton showed a good turn of speed to win the 300m, supported by Molly Whatmore, while Charlotte Reading was too good for her rivals in the 1,500m with Rose Ellis in support. There was a strong showing from Sophie-Anne Haigh, Jade Bailey and Caitlin Moore in the sprints as well as Abbie Moss and Amber Westron in the 800m, while Zoe Nunn had a good third in the hammer.

The previous day a team of ten athletes represented Chichester in an under-13 match and while achieving no individual victories, they showed great promise for the rest of the season.

Amelia Freeman, Emily Guiry, Chloe Croad, Maddie Smith and Alyssa White were in action for the girls while the boys’ squad comprised Ben Collins, Will Broome, Josh Eeles, Archie Ayling and Sam Haigh.

Under-15 match result: 1 Crawley 210pts, 2 Chichester 174, 3 Horsham 141, 4 East Grinstead 92, 5 Haywards Heath 73.
