Cold snap might get injured fit again - Campbell

Due to a frozen pitch Horsham were unable to take their Sussex Cup success of the previous week into the first league game of 2016 at Broadbridge Heath on Saturday.

They were set to host eighth-placed Woking with a hope of closing the gap at the top of the South Premier Division 2 table.

The pitch may well have been playable by the scheduled push back at 1.30pm, but league rules dictate that a decision must be made before the away team need to depart and the match was called off at 11.00am.

The squad were also unable to train on Tuesday night due to frost, but with warmer weather due at the end of the week the team will make the trip round the M25 to West Hampstead this Saturday.

The Horsham camp is hoping the unexpected time off the pitch will not have blunted the sharpness they showed in front of goal when beating Lewes in their latest outing.

Team manager Al Campbell feels the cold snap may have given them a break to allow some niggling injuries in the squad time to recover.

But coach Dom Male is still doubtful to play due to his broken hand taking longer than expected to recover.

The team may also be without Jack Dean who pulled a hamstring in the Lewes game – he is not only Horsham’s leading scorer this term, his 11 goal tally gives him a share of the divisional leader-board.

Horsham trail second-placed Winchester by five points and leaders London Edwardians, who like Male’s side have played a game less than the others around them.

Campbell believes it’s important for the team to look on the bright side and remain upbeat ahead of this weekend’s game.

He said: “None of the boys like missing games or training, especially when they feel up for it.

“However we have one or two other niggling injuries in the squad and perhaps the enforced rest will give the boys chance to recuperate.

“We’re still very much in with a shout of promotion but we need to hit the ground running on Saturday.”

Most other games were played last week, the most notable result for fifth-placed Horsham being Tulse Hill’s 5-5 draw at Holcombe.

The south London side are sitting three points above Horsham in third, but are within range if results go the right way.
