Cornish: It was a good season

The Horntye Park Sports Complex-based outfit came second in South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One only to lose a promotion play-off and reached the Sussex Plate final.

Saxons captain Cornish said: “Overall I think it was a good season. Everyone’s enjoyed it and that was the main aim when I took over (last summer). Hopefully we can go a step further next year and win the league.”

It was the third successive time Saxons have finished runners-up in the league (and second consecutive season they lost in the play-off) and the second time in three years they have got to the Sussex Plate decider.

Jim Towers, a newcomer to the club this season, looks to have played his last game after securing a job in the Swindon area. “He’s a good lad and a good player as well,” added Cornish, who is willing to continue as skipper.

“I have enjoyed my first season as captain. I didn’t really know what I was letting myself in for at the start of the season and the first couple of months it was hard work, but it’s got easier as the season’s gone on.”
