Cricket club honours 'marvellous' sportsman Tyrone

THE marvellous cricketing accomplishments, amiable nature and impeccable conduct of Tyrone Wildman over a 30 year period were acknowledged at, what chairman Trevor Ramsden labelled, an "emotional" Sidley Cricket Club presentation evening on Friday night.

Wildman (pictured right), who also presented the prizes, is still performing with distinction for the club's front side in the Sussex League and regularly represents Sussex at over-50s level.

First team captain and MC for the evening Scott Woodroffe read out a series of tributes from fellow players and officials, all extoling Wildman's plentiful virtues.

Respected umpire Dave Morris wrote: "He has given so much to Sidley Cricket Club over a period of 30 years. In all the years I've known him his personality and respect for others haven't wavered and if there's a fitter over-50s cricketer, I certainly haven't seen him. In recent years standards of conduct and attitudes towards opponents have sadly declined and I just wish the game could be played the Tyrone Wildman way."

Woodroffe, who presented the player with a special 'lifetime achievement' trophy plus a framed photo of himself in action signed by the club's players, added: "The word 'great' I think tends to be over-used these days but I don't think that anyone would argue with me that Tyrone is a great and has become a legend of not only our own club but of club cricket in the local area as well."

Wildman, who was not expecting the accolade, said: "I'm over the moon. It has been a privilege playing for the club. They are a special family and Sidley is the only club for me."

The colleague Wildman was distributing many of the prizes to was Chris Deeprose. The young all-rounder was the second team batsman and bowler of the year despite only playing for them three times, top six hitter and the Jack Crittenden Shield recipient for his staggering 10 wicket haul in the seconds' victory over Pulborough.
