Cricket: Kirdford hoping for sunnier outlook in 2013

As the cricket season comes to an end, our village teams have still been busy - with some glad to see a rain-hit year come to a conclusion and others wishing it could go on a bit longer yet.

Kirdford v Ancient Mariners

A gloriously warm day heralded Kirdford CC’s last match of the 2012 season against the Ancient Mariners.

Asked to bat first, the Mariners got off to a flyer, with T Dixon (128) and J Holmes (35) putting on an opening stand of 150.

Good bowling from Mark Rockcliffe and Leo Methley puts the brakes on, but the Mariners still scored 261 all out.

In reply Kirdford got into early trouble with tight bowling from the Mariners.

Resistance came from M Methley (22) and Jamie Rountree (41) but it swiftly came to and end with an excellent spell from C Van Oppen (4-11).

So a rain-affected season closed with a loss, but it was a very enjoyable day.

Kirdford look forward to a sunnier 2013.

Havant v Bognor Sunday XI

On a belter of a track at Havant Park, the home side chose to bat. A fine 109 from S Walker with support from C Stone (57) saw Havant finish on 272 for six, Bognor skipper John Hooker taking three for 29.

Bognor’s chase stuttered because of run-outs and well-taken catches.

Rob Willway (39no), Mikey Wake (30) and veteran Iain Ashmore (27) kept Bognor in the game but they finished on 156 all out, Havant winning by 116 runs.

Ashling v Chidham & Hambrook

Tommy Munday’s 75 was the key factor in Ashling re-establishing bragging rights over their local rivals.

Seeking 145 to win, the home side got home with ten overs to spare - but only after a tight battle.

Youngster Tom Phizackerly took three late wickets to leave Ashling No10 Steve Harvey to scramble the winning run.

Earlier Clive Dungar’s 40 was Hawks’ best batting performance with Loubser, Harvey and Shaul taking two wickets each for Ashling.

Selsey v Aldwick

Aldwick openers Dean Stokes (45) and Adam Rutter (18) got their side off to a great start with a 82-run first-wicket partnership. Further runs from Nabid Rahan (46) took the visitors to a respectable 177 all out.

For Selsey, Tom Benham was top wicket-taker with 3-36.

Selsey were in trouble at 90 for six mainly down to Ollie Smith’s three for 28, but man of the match Tom Benham (39*) and Rob Twyford (26*) took their side to victory by four wickets.

Angmering v Aldwick Acorns

A comfortable win by the Acorns was set up with a good batting performance as young Adam Robinson made his first half-century in adult cricket finishing on 63.

His older brother Dan opened with a worthwhile 24 and Alex Cooper struck 34. Despite the splendid efforts of Luke Faulkner (3-25) the visitors finished on a comfortable 228 for nine.

Angmering were always behind the rate with only Paddy Chapman (45*) making a significant score as the home side were rolled over for just 103. Bowlers of the day for the Acorns were Dan Cooper (3-14) and veteran Dave Robinson (2-14).
