EAST PRESTON Cricket Club captain Andy Reeves described his side's batting display as "shambolic" in their 110-run defeat to Southwick on Saturday.

EP were dismissed for just 112 in their West Sussex Invitation League Division 1 game against newly-promoted Wickers, although they were just 14 balls away from hanging on for the draw.

Reeves said: "We let them get too many runs and our batting was just shambolic – it was horrible to watch.

"There were too many silly shots and, afterwards, we worked out that our last three batsmen faced 58 per cent of deliveries. If our top eight had faced a couple more balls each, we wouldn't have lost.

"We were seven wickets down in just 18 overs, although Paul Grennan bowled very well for them.

"But their bowlers put the ball in the right place, whereas ours didn't."

After winning the toss, Reeves stuck Southwick into bat and they scored 222-9 from their 49 overs – a score Reeves felt was chasable.

Dan Feniuk top-scored with 47 for Wickers, while captain Chris Summers added 42, Tim Shutt 40 and Chris Ballard 37. For EP, opening bowlers Mark Coskin and Gareth Bunday both took three wickets.

EP found life hard going in their reply and were soon 65-8, before Reeves and Coskin put up some resistance before Coskin was last man out for 37.

Paceman Grennan took 7-32 from 16.4 overs and one of his deliveries fractured Tom Reeves' thumb, which could keep EP's batsman out for up to three weeks.

East Preston are away to Wisborough Green on Saturday. Tom Reeves, Tom Chamberlain, Richard Laker and Dan Williams are all unavailable, but Jack Sunderland, who missed Saturday's game with a finger injury, could return.
