Cricket: Pagham edge away from relegation battle

Pagham hosted Wisborough Green in division three west of the Sussex League knowing a victory would remove them from the relegation zone.

Wisborough were in a more ominous situation and, knowing they had to win, they elected to field first.

A lack of firepower in their bowling ranks saw Kejel Tyson (95) and William Rolls (59) put on 151 as Pagham enjoyed one of their best second-wicket partnerships of recent times.

With the score at 158 for one, the last man you want to see coming to the crease is Wayne Green and he duly scored 35 with a strikerate well in excess of 100.

This allowed the captain to tinker with the batting order for quick runs and although the innings petered out somewhat, Pagham still recorded a rather intimidating 250 for nine.

Wisborough Green could never muster up a partnership to threaten the total. Peter Cotterill (1-14) was tough to get away and at 49 for three, courtesy also of wickets from Sam Dickens (2-41), Pagham were the only genuine victory candidates.

Ex-pro Alex Edwards (46) re-ignited Wisborough Green’s hopes but once he departed, Wisborough played for the draw rather than to acquire maximum batting points – bringing a rather unsatisfactory conclusion.

When it’s not Green with spin, it’s Sean Rutter (3-38) who’s turning the
ball, and his season around, but it was not sufficient for 30 points as Wisborough Green finished on 166 for seven.

Pagham remain 55 points ahead of bottom-placed Littlehampton, knowing one win will put paid to any minor relegation worries.
