CRICKET: Vinter targets better second innings from Littlehampton

AFTER a weekend off and the chance to recharge their batteries, Littlehampton Cricket Club captain Luke Vinter is targeting a vast improvement in the second half of his side's season.

Littlehampton are 49 points adrift at the bottom of Sussex League Division 2 and are without a win this year.

But, after a light training session and team meeting last week, they are now equipped with new tactics and a game plan for the remaining matches.

Vinter said: "We all discussed where we want to go as a team and how to improve.

"We are going to look to close and restrict the opposition and then chase them down. It's not something we've done well this year but last season, it was how we won games.

"It'll be vital to ensure we keep our wickets and then charge our opponents down. We want to stop teams batting second and holding on for the draw. And, as we are bottom, I think people will want to stop us winning, anyway."

Vinter believes that, currently, Littlehampton are hot favourites for the drop but thinks it will be a battle between themselves, St James, Middleton, Worthing and Roffey.

He said: "As captain, it has been a struggle this year. I've tried to focus on the positives, as we have played well in a few games and not won.

"But, now it is all about getting results, so I don't care if we play rubbish and win."

The skipper will be looking to himself and other senior players in the squad to lead by example in their quest for safety. He said: "I've struggled a bit with an elbow problem this year but, when I have bowled, I've been poor. I'll hold my hand up to that.

"I think I have taken five wickets so far in the whole first half of the season, which just isn't good enough.

"Benn Challen has always been a top player for us and he will be the first to admit he hasn't had the best season. It's up to us senior players to step forward."

Littlehampton's 3rd team were the first of the men's teams to pick up a win this season on Saturday, when they beat Middleton.

The 2nd XI then won in the Sussex 20/20 Cup on Sunday, when the women's team also won, and Vinter said: "It's good to get the club back winning again. Hopefully, it will rub off on to us and we can get things right against Glynde at the weekend."
