ARUNDEL crashed to a 67-run defeat in Division 3 West of the Sussex League against Steyning on Saturday and dropped to second from bottom in the table.

It was Arundel's first defeat of the season, though, after two wins and three draws from their opening five games.

Arundel won the toss and decided to insert their opponents and started well to restrict them to less than 20 runs from their opening 10 overs.

Neil Chitty came on after opening bowlers Harrison Temple and Ian Dabinett-Jays had little luck, and Chitty took a wicket with just his second ball.

From then on, though, the Steyning batsmen put in strong performances. Matt Sewell hit 64 not out and David Kennett top-scored with an unbeaten 69 as Steyning declared on 248-4 after 49 overs.

Arundel skipper Richard James said: "To be fair, we bowled pretty well but everything that went in the air either went just to the side, or over, our fielders.

"Steyning then lost a couple of quick wickets and were 74-3 and we were back in the game. Again their new batsman, Gary Hunt, got away with a spooned drive just over cover before he had scored and went on to make 41, and Dave Kennett was also dropped in single figures."

Arundel made a strong start and put on 53 for the first wicket with openers Bradley James and Ryan Chitty scoring 15 and 41 respectively.

But a mid-order collapse left them struggling at 87-6 before Temple crashed 47. However, the wickets continued to fall and Arundel were dismissed for 181.

James said: "Ryan made a welcome return to form and looked good for his 41, but we then lost our way with batters making starts and getting themselves out on what was a good track. And, after having a platform for a good chase, we found ourselves 87-6.

"Harrison then played an excellent counter-attacking innings and showed the rest of us what was possible with better shot selection and concentration.

"Steyning fully deserved the win but we really didn't do ourselves justice in the all-round performance that we put in."

East Preston crashed an to eight-wicket defeat at the hands of league leaders Broadwater in West Sussex Invitation League Division 1.

EP won the toss and decided to bat first but their innings got off to a disastrous start and they were 10-4 after five overs. Richard Laker scored 29 before Tom Chamberlain, with 26, and captain Andy Reeves, with 29 not out, added a little resistance to get the total up to 140.

Reeves said: "Things really didn't go according to plan.

"The wicket looked fine but two of our batsman got out to shooters, one was bowled and the other lbw, so it was misbehaving a little.

"In saying that, James Iago (4-25) bowled very well for his wickets. He is a class bowler, but we also lost a few to loose shots in the top-order.

"I thought it may be like the Clymping game earlier in the season, where we crawled to 125 and won.

"I was at the crease for an hour and a half for my 29, and we wanted to see out our overs and try and put something near 150 on the board.

"Realistically though, I didn't think it would be enough but at least it gave us something to bowl at."

Broadwater cruised to a comfortable victory as Graham Waller (65) and Bob Reynolds (42 not out) put on 113 for the first wicket before they got home just two wickets down.

Reeves added: "Although we knew it would be tough, it was a disappointing the way things went.

"We have the bottom two clubs in our next two games, firstly Ram then Felbridge so, hopefully, we should get results from those two as we have no selection issues at the moment."

Clymping came out on top in a close-fought match against Southwater in the same division with a single-wicket victory.

Southwater scored 177 with Johann Brouwer their top scorer with 69. Paul Challen took 4-35 for Clymping.

Sam Orchard then hit 66 for Clymping but it was captain Karl Pierce's unbeaten 44 which guided them to victory and lifted them to fourth in the table.
