CRICKET: Weekly round-up (May 21)

ARUNDEL shot up to second in Sussex League Division 3 West on Saturday after a three-wicket win over Henfield gave them the maximum 30 points.

Arundel, who now have two wins and a draw from their three games, won the toss and inserted their opponents. They then produced a top fielding and bowling performance to have Henfield all out for 173 in 47 overs.

Opener Brett Moore (34) top-scored for Henfield, and Craig Scott added an unbeaten 33. Rakesh Parmar took 5-50 and Neil Chitty 2-62 as wickets fell at frequent intervals.

Arundel captain Richard James said: "It was a very good all-round performance. We fielded and bowled pretty well, in what were awkward conditions due to the strong winds.

"One very satisfying aspect was the ground fielding. Gareth Bricknell produced two run-outs, while Rohan Ardley ran-out their opener with an excellent throw over the stumps. I couldn't have asked for more."

Arundel had a steady start with the bat, although Steve Mullen and Ardley both fell in quick succession which left them 40-2.

Bradley James, with 48, and father Richard James, with 53 not out, then put them back on track as others chipped in as well to take them to the required total, seven wickets down. in 47.1 overs.

Richard James said: "Although we won by three wickets with a few overs to spare, Henfield were always in with a shout and if we hadn't applied ourselves properly, they could have sneaked a win.

"Nevertheless, it's 30 points secured and the guys have really stepped up to the challenge."

East Preston settled for a draw in their West Sussex Invitation League Division 1 home clash against Horsham Trinity, where the result could have gone either way.

The result leaves EP in second which encourages captain Andy Reeves.

He said: "This time last year we were still looking for our first win, so to be sitting second now is excellent.

"And there is no reason why we can't be here or higher at the end of the season. We've got to keep it up when it matters and keep things going."

EP, after being put into bat, scored 235-3 from 48 overs. And Jack Sunderland, who fell for 96, and Colin Smith, who hit 54, shared a partnership of 155 for the second wicket.

Trinity came out of the blocks fighting, though, and started off at six runs an over before resistance from Williams, who took 4-45, and Sunderland, who grabbed 2-20, halted their flow down the order and they finished on 208-8.

Reeves added: "At one stage they looked as though they were going to do it, but we picked up a few wickets as they slowed up down the order."

Clymping are still on the hunt for their first win as they suffered a five-wicket defeat against Crawley Eagles, also in Division 1.

Clymping lost the toss and were inserted but found themselves struggling at 46-6 until captain Karl Pierce and Alex Pugh hit 42 and 46 not out respectively to give them a total of 161-9 after 49 overs.

Clymping made a good start with the ball and dismissed Crawley's opening three batsmen for just 19 runs. But Fallah (54) and Waqaurs (47) got them back on course to secure a comfortable victory with just five wickets down in the 42nd over.

Captain Karl Pierce said: "It was the first time we haven't been bowled out, but we still are not firing with the bat.

"A few of us are just not performing at the moment, but I've got a couple of players coming in next week, so hopefully, it's onwards and upwards."

Rustington failed to find the runs they needed to pick up their first win of the season as their Division 3 match with Aldwick ended in a draw.

Rustington won the toss and put Aldwick into bat but, despite taking two early wickets, they then struggled in a wicketless spell.

Aldwick opener Joel Lodge managed to get his 50, before Simon Gosden's prolific spell of 5-78 eliminated Aldwick's middle order.

Despite Mish Patel efforts late on with 2-14, Rustington were unable to get the final wicket and Aldwick finished on 211-9.

Rustington captain Martyn Payne dropped to number four after picking up an injury, leaving Alex Fitch and Matt Cousins to open the batting. But the partnership didn't last long as Fitch gave an easy catch and Cousins went not long after.

But Gosden, with his first half-century for the club, aided by Grant Melvin's 23, enabled Rustington to finish on 136-7.
