Defeat in opener comes with positive points for Littlehampton CC

Littlehampton CC slipped to a 32-run defeat away to Horsham twos in their opening Sussex League Division 4 West game of the season.

Horsham won the toss and chose to bat on a wicket that saw over 1500 runs scored on it during the week in a Sussex 2nd XI match.

Dan Foot took three wickets on his 1st XI league debut, but Horsham made 285 with Max Barson scoring 101.

Littlehampton were hampered by two injuries, and lost three early wickets.

A partnership of 166 between Dan Matheson (76) and Jacob Flint (74) gave Littlehampton some hope before falling 32 runs short.

Captain Mike Askew said: "There were some positives with Jacob and Dan scoring their maiden 50s for the 1st XI and Will bowling really well at the death, but there is plenty to work on to be competitive this season."

In Division 7 West, Littlehampton 2nd XI (109 all out) lost to Billingshurst 2nd XI (232/6) by 123 runs.

Billingshurst won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 232 in their 40 overs, Theo Trevelyan-Clark scoring 102*, bringing his century up in the final over.

Andy Greig was pick of the bowlers with 3-39.

In reply Littlehampton started slowly and never recovered, with Luca Vorster taking four wickets in four balls to bring the game to an early conclusion. He ended with figures of 5-26, his first ever five-wicket haul.

In Division 10 West, Horley 3rd XI (210/6) beat Littlehampton 3rd XI (192/8) by 18 runs.

This was the 3rd XI’s second game of the season after being rained off halfway through the game away to Wisborough Green last week.

Littlehampton started strongly and had Horley 72-4 at drinks. Horley recovered strongly with a partnership of 129 to set a good total on a ground with big boundaries.

In reply Simon Hopton (61) and Jacob Murphy (50) put on 98 to give Littlehampton hope, but some tight bowling after drinks and a flurry of wickets meant Littlehampton fell just short.

In the Paul Baker Trophy, Littlehampton 2nd XI lost by nine runs to Aldwick 1st XI on Sunday in a rearranged T20 game after a washout last week between innings.

Mohammed Shadab scored 62 but it was in vain as Aldwick bowler Tanveer Ahmed turned the game around, with figures of 3-8 from his three overs at the death.
