The Hastings Priory and Sussex County Cricket Club talent was part of the England side which edged out arch rivals Australia in the third place play-off on Friday.

Australia posted 246-7 from their 50 overs batting first in Dubai. Finch made 15 at the top of the order in England’s reply, but when he was out stumped to make it 41-3 in the 10th over, the team looked in a spot of bother.

A brilliant 100, however, from man of the match Ben Duckett kept England in with a chance and an unbeaten 20 off just 12 balls by last man Matthew Fisher took them over the line with one wicket and two balls to spare.

It was a good campaign for England, who were only beaten by three wickets with five balls to spare in their semi-final against Pakistan the previous Monday. Finch and fellow opener Jonathan Tattersall both fell for ducks in that game.

England pulled off a magnificent victory over defending champions India in the quarter-finals. Much-fancied India recovered from 8-3 and 24-4 to total 221-8 batting first. Finch scored 10 as England got home with five balls and three wickets to spare.

St Leonards-based Finch, 19, also played in all three of England’s group D games. He scored 49 in the 213-run victory over United Arab Emirates, 24 in the one-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka and 30 in the 115-run success against New Zealand.
