Horner the hero for Selsey... Priest answers Wittering prayers

Selsey v Belgrave Adelaide

Invitation League division three

Selsey won the toss and elected to bat and complied a competitive 230 for five off 49 overs.

The innings was built round Karl Walton (27), Dave Benham (32) and a fine 74 not out from stand-in skipper Nick Horner.

But it was Pete Horner who stole the show with a blistering 48 not out at the end which included three sixes.

In reply Belgrave never made an attempt to chase down the score and limped to 96 for nine off 45 overs, leaving Selsey frustrated with a winning draw.

Tom Amis (3-18), Tom Cripps (2-32), Josh Stocks (1-33) and Pete Horner (3-9) took the wickets. A tough trip to Horsham awaits this week.

Three Bridges v West Wittering

Division three

Witterings won the toss and Carl Tupper elected to field first.

Three Bridges started brightly, but some fine bowling by Tim Osborne and Joe Pink restricted them to 90 at drinks. With Three Bridges pushing hard in the final 20 overs, Jewiss and Clunie took three and four wickets respectively with smart bowling, along with fine performances in the field, to restrict Three Bridges to 204.

The Wittering reply started brightly through Taylor and Irwin-Brown, with both playing some fine shots. After Taylor fell, Irwin-Brown was supported well by Gray and Lowther.

Having reached 89, Irwin-Brown fell just shy of a well-deserved century, and it was left to Andy Priest to hit the winning runs in the 33rd over.

Storrington v Aldwick

Division two

Aldwick’s perfect start to their league campaign continued with a thumping win over Storrington and they finished the day as league leaders, 16 points ahead of Eastergate.

Skipper Joel Lodge’s decision to ask the home side to bat first looked the right choice as opener Matt Talbot fell to Ollie Smith (1-51) without scoring.

However, despite being being dropped on eight, Talbot’s opening partner Billy Harris went to make 75.

Opening bowlers Smith and Adam Robinson (0-22) found it difficult to make any further significant inroads, so it was left to the first-change pair of Keelan Belcher (3-16) and Louis Paul (4-7) to decimate the home side’s line-up in spells which produced a further five ducks and ended the home side’s innings on 150 in the 44th over.

Victory for the table-toppers came easily in over 31 chiefly thanks to an opening partnership of 103 by Louis Paul (77) and Joel Lodge (43*) which ended when Paul was eventually outdone by Jonathan Carpenter (1-35). Adam Rutter added 19 to help his side achieve an easy victory with maximum points.

Aldwick face Clymping this week.

Aldwick 2nds v Chichester Priory Park 3rds

Division six

Aldwick seconds , like the firsts, have an unbeaten start to the season and are also table-toppers after defeating Chichester Priory Park III by 31 runs.

Despite losing opener Tom Hoad for a duck, Aldwick’s remaining men batted consistenly as Scott Bingham (59), Matt Spindler (31), Amit Chauhan (28) and Will Lewry (28*) all weighed in with good knocks which gave their side a defendable total of 198 for seven.

Wickets were shared amongst the seven Priory Park bowlers with Aiden Sheppard taking two for 25.

The visitors also batted consistenly with worthwhile contributions from Mohan Babu (30), Steve Parker (32) and Philip Jull (63) but ultimately they were never up with the run rate and fell way short on 167 for six.

Ben Bainbridge (1-13), Grant Wilson (1-28), Amit Chauhan (1-7) and Scott Bingham (2-18) all had good spells which ensured a home side victory and put their side at the top of division six.

West Wittering 2nds v Littlehampton 3rds

Division eight

Skipper Mark Brien won the toss and Wittering produced a fantastic effort in the field.

Tom Goodall kicked the excitement off with a caught behind in the fifth over. Goodall took three more wickets and Charlie Caddy bowled a fantastic spell taking one wicket. Brien took two late key wickets, picking up bowling points, and the opposition ended the innings 97 for nine.

Unfortunately the traditional Wittering Wobble took place as they lost four wickets for just 15 runs.

Liam Bates was the stronghold, finishing on 48 not out. Caddy played an excellent late innings for 18, including a glorious six.

Wittering reached the target within 31 overs to secure the win and take the lead at the top of division eight.

Crawley Down 2nds v Selsey 2nds

Division nine

Selsey seconds made the long trip to Crawley Down and came away with a two-wicket win.

Selsey won the toss and and restricted Crawley Down to 188 for six. Ashley Humphries (1-31), Adrian Harris (1-28), James Chaloner (1-44) and top wicket-taker Will Smith (3-39) did the damage.

In reply Selsey got off to a blistering start as Nic Nolan tore into the Crawley captain’s bowling, taking him for 34 in his first two overs.

Nolan fell for 66 going for a big shot too many and a slight wobble was on the cards. Captain Dave Clarke steadied the ship with 23 and it was left to Adrian Harris to be the matchwinner with a super 70 not out to make it back-to-back victories.
