In-form Priory too strong for Ansty

Hastings Priory’s cricketers made it four home wins out of four in convincing fashion on Saturday.

Priory triumphed by 111 runs against second-bottom Ansty to strengthen their hold on second place in Sussex Cricket League Division Two.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Priory amassed 252-5 declared from 50 overs thanks to a series of solid contributions from the top seven.

The returning Joe Billings and Elliot Hooper got Priory off to a quick start. Hooper continued his consistent form with 54 - his second successive half-century and third of the season - while Billings was run out for 46.

Number three Ted Smith made a patient 25 and Tom Gillespie contributed 24 before Jake Woolley and Jed O’Brien upped the tempo in the latter part of the innings with a quickfire unbroken sixth wicket partnership.

The in-form Woolley made a season’s best 54 not out off 45 balls with five fours and three sixes, while O’Brien smashed an unbeaten 32 from just 19 deliveries with three fours and a six. Leo Anderson was the most successful bowler with 3-72.

Priory quickly got stuck into the Ansty batting after tea. Three of the top four were dismissed for one run between them, Adam Barton maintaining his excellent form with two wickets and Henry Smith bagging the other.

Opening batsman Grove Venter (40) and captain Jonathan Young (46) did their best to mount a recovery, but Anderson (37) was the only other Ansty player to score more than two as the visitors were all out for 141 in 38.2 overs. No less than five batsmen failed to trouble the scorers.

All five Priory bowlers got among the wickets. Hooper was the most successful with 3-15 from 7.2 overs, while Barton ended with 2-14 off seven and John Morgan 2-18 off six. Henry Smith and O’Brien took one apiece.
