Jack and Tom star in EP’s away victory

AN OUTSTANDING 256-run partnership between Jack Sunderland and Tom Reeves took East Preston Cricket Club to a seven-wicket win away to Broadwater on Saturday.

Broadwater started the day top of the West Sussex Invitation League and declared after 47 overs on 260-5 after Corey Cogan struck 118 and Graham Waller hit 60.

East Preston were reduced to 5-3 early in their reply but Sunderland and Reeves both scored centuries to take their side to victory with more than 11 overs to spare.

Cogan and Waller put on 133 for Broadwater’s opening wicket, before Waller was caught by Sunderland off Tom Wareham-Grinstead’s bowling for 60, after hitting 11 fours from 67 balls.

Cogan then added 54 for the second wicket with Nigel Waller (18), before he was fifth man out for 118 after striking 22 fours and one six off 128 deliveries.

Bob Reynolds hit 27 not out from 34 balls as Broadwater declared on 260-5.

East Preston captain Gary Weedon was caught by Graham Waller off James Salisbury’s bowling for a duck, with the fourth ball of his side’s reply.

Tom Chamberlain (nought) and Tim Miles (three) were both then bowled by Fitzroy Hodges to leave the visitors 5-3.

However, Sunderland then blasted 145 not out from just 90 balls, with 15 fours and six sixes, and Reeves struck an unbeaten 101, from 98 deliveries, with 11 fours, as EP got home with plenty of overs to spare.

Weedon said: “It was a great win and there was some excellent hitting from Tom and Jack.

“To be honest, we were really disappointed coming off the field at tea. After electing to bowl, we were gutted we weren’t able to make early inroads into their order and 260 runs was way more than we were hoping to chase.

“The first 20 overs were extremely sloppy, bowlers were erratic and the fielding was poor. At one point, we were looking like chasing 300-plus.

“When we were 5-3, the game looked completely over, however, a record-breaking 256-run stand for the fourth wicket took us to a win.

“It was the best partnership I have seen in this league and to finish the game with 12 overs to spare tells you how well they were seeing the ball.”

East Preston entertain Horsham Trinity on Saturday.
