Littlehampton set for survival battle

LITTLEHAMPTON Cricket Club captain Dan Rive is targeting victory at Bognor Regis on Saturday as his side bid for survival in Sussex League Division 3 West.

Littlehampton head into the final game of the season bottom of the table but are just seven points behind second-from-bottom Wisborough Green, who host Arundel in their final game.

On Saturday, Littlehampton took 10 points from their 20/20 game with Billingshurst – which reads as an abandoned game in the league table. As Billingshurst won, they took 16 points from the match but it was not enough to stop Middleton from being crowned champions.

On this Saturday’s match, Rive said: “We just have to concentrate on what we can do. We can’t think about what’s going on in Wisborough Green’s match with Arundel. We’ve got ourselves into this position and it’s up to us to dig ourselves out of the hole we find ourselves in.

“We need to win the game but we don’t know how many points we’ll need, we may find that 24 points could be enough to keep us up.”

Billingshurst won the toss on Saturday in the reduced-overs game and opted to bat first.

Dhanushka Mitipolaarchchi survived a run-out appeal when on 64 and went on to finish unbeaten on 104 as Billingshurst scored 210-3 off their 20 overs.

Pete Burroughs also hit 48 not out and Mike Burroughs struck 27 as Jordan Farrell picked up 2-22 from his four overs.

Littlehampton made a strong start in their reply through openers Amjad Mohsin (16) and Chris Heberlein (52). But once they both fell and Michael Askew was out for 23, Littlehampton’s run chase lost momentum and they were all out for 139 in 19.4 overs.

Andy Barr took 6-28 from his four overs for Billingshurst.
