The former Pulborough player has been at the club for two seasons and is another young skipper at just 22, following in the footsteps of outgoing captain Ben Williams.

After an impressive debut season in the Premier Division last year, Barber and the team will be putting the hard work in over the coming weeks to maintain the standards.

He said: “I am very much looking forward to it and I am excited to get underway.

“I am not too nervous at all, we all get on really well as a team and there is good support from the boys and rest of the club.

“Ben felt it was the right time to step down, but is still very much involved at the club, which is great news for me as he can teach me a few things. There is a lot of hard work over the winter and we started training at Hove as of the end of February.

“As regards to players, we are looking to recruit as soon as possible, but there is no news at the moment, it is still early doors.”

One player that is set to return is long-term overseas Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi, although former Sussex player Chris Liddle will not be back having joined Gloucestershire.

Barber added: “We had a few Sussex players last year, but that is all very much up in the air at the moment.

“They are sorting out their contracts, but hopefully we will have a few as Abi Sakande was a great addition, as were the academy boys, Will Fazakerley and Tom Nightingale.”
