Pierce takes six as Rye extend lead

Rye returned to winning ways on Saturday and extended their lead at the top of the East Sussex Cricket League in the process.

The men from The Salts bounced straight back from their first loss of the season the previous weekend with a five-wicket victory away to Division One’s bottom club Ringmer. Rye now find themselves 20 points clear.

Rye welcomed back Craig Pierce from an injury which had seen him miss six games and it was as if the opening bowler had never been away. Pierce took six wickets in all to earn the Gandhi Tandoori man of the match award.

In tandem with Sandun Dias, Pierce tore through the top order to leave Ringmer 58-5. Ringmer skipper Mat Savage led by example with 73, but the revival was soon punctured by a returning Pierce (6-41) taking two wickets in two balls. Dias (3-51) also returned and Ringmer were all out for 170 in 48 overs.

Rye’s response on the small Ringmer ground exploded with runs, but also two wickets as Dias and Hamilton were early victims. 33-2 prompted suggestions of rebuilding, however on a diet of Twenty20 cricket, the young Rye batsmen were in a hurry.

Dan Seabrook led the charge with 56 as he and Jackson Woodcock (30) put on 70 in 12 overs. Will Wheeler then finished the job with 50 not out in 36 balls and the final runs were delivered by a massive straight six as Rye reached their target in just 24 overs.
