Priory dump league leaders out of T20 Cup

Hastings Priory produced a superb performance to send league leaders Preston Nomads tumbling out of the Gray-Nicolls Sussex T20 Cup.

Nomads scored 162-4 after deciding to bat on a glorious Sunday afternoon at Horntye Park with Carl Simon hitting 68 not out off 47 balls. Elliot Hooper took 2-21, and there was a wicket each for Freddie Hulbert and George Campbell as Priory kept things impressively tight during the closing overs.

Byron Gould got Priory’s reply off to a flying start with 56 off 29 balls containing seven fours and three sixes. Priory raced to 72 off the first six overs and Gould brought up his fifty in the seventh.

Priory had got to 111-5 in the 12th over when Dave Lowery fell for 18 off 14 balls. Hooper then hit 23 from 17 deliveries until falling to a spectacular one-handed diving catch at 144-6 in the 17th over.

But young guns Leo Cammish (16 not out) and Tom Gillespie (12 not out) guided Priory home at 163-6 with an over to spare aided by some excellent running between the wickets. Priory’s reward is a semi-final away to Three Bridges on Sunday July 28.
