Priory held by Horsham

HASTINGS Priory have stretched their lead at the top of the Sussex Cricket League by a single point despite being held to a draw by third-placed Horsham.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first at Horntye Park Sports Complex on Saturday. Most of the Horsham top order got starts with Matt Henry (56) and Craig Gallagher (47) top scoring in a total of 243-7 off 57 overs.

The most successful Priory bowlers were Kirk Wernars (2-70), Josh Poysden (2-57) and Jason Finch (2-55).

Skipper Adam Maharaj-Newman (23) and Wernars (29) got Priory off to a useful start in reply before Max Finzel weighed in with an undefeated 68. Jason Finch added 44 as Priory finished on 210-8 off 51 overs.

Henry claimed 4-69 and former Somerset leg spinner Michael Munday 2-52 for a Horsham side which picked up 14 points.

Although Priory had to make do with 10 points, they still increased their advantage as Preston Nomads - who had been second before the start of play - received only two points following their draw with fourth-placed East Grinstead.

In Division Two, Bexhill went down by eight wickets against Cuckfield, while in Division Three (East), Crowhurst Park returned to winning ways by seeing off Crawley and Sidley were knocked off top spot after losing to Hellingly.
