Sussex's Garton misses out as England romp to victory in U19 World Cup

Sussex player George Garton missed out as his England side convincingly defeated Fiji at the U19 World Cup in Bangladesh.

After playing in a warm-up win over Namibia last Saturday, the 18-year-old, who has played for Three Bridges and Horsham, wasn’t involved as England won by a record 299 runs in Chittagong on Wednesday.

Captain Brad Taylor won the toss and elected to bat first, as opener Dan Lawrence hit an impressive 174 from 150 balls, while Jack Burnham notched 148 from 137 balls.

Max Holden, Callum Taylor and George Bartlett also contributed to England’s final total after 50 overs of 371/3.

Fiji were then skittled out for just 72 runs, with Sam Curran (three wickets and a run out), Ben Green (two wickets) and Brad Taylor (one wicket) impressing with the ball.

Pace bowler Saqib Mahmood was the pick of the bowlers with figures of three wickets for two runs from five overs.

England’s next match is on Friday, where they take on West Indies.
