World Cup exit for Sussex and Horsham youngster

Horsham and Sussex young gun Tom Clark couldn’t prevent England U19s from crashing out at the group stage of the 2020 ICC U19 World Cup.

The Haywards Heath-born batsman top-scored with 38 for the young Lions in their 71-run defeat to West Indies U19s in Kimberley, South Africa on Monday January 20.

But the opener couldn’t rediscover his form as England suffered a two-wicket loss against old foes Australia in the second game of Group B three days later.

The Lions, put in by the Aussies, hit 252-7 off their allotted 50 overs but Clark could only score two.

In reply, the Baggy Green struck 253-8 in 50 overs to take the win and advance to the semi-finals.

On Saturday England wrapped up a comfortable eight-wicket win over Nigeria U19s in a dead rubber.

The African nation were skittled for 58 in 27.5 overs as George Hill (4-12) and Hamidullah Qadri (4-24) shared eight-wickets.

The young Lions then charged to 64-2 in just 11 overs to take victory in their final group game.

Clark hit 11 off 17 balls before he was caught off the bowling of Peter Aho (1-14).

England face Zimbabwe in the Plate semi-finals on Friday.
