Worthing looking to build on 'important result' after Division 2 safety is secured

Worthing 1st XI secured a crucial victory in their final Sussex Cricket League Division 2 fixture, going into the game knowing that only a win would guarantee their safety from relegation.

After losing the toss and being put into the field, Worthing made the perfect start, striking twice inside the opening two overs to immediately put the opposition under pressure. The bowlers maintained control throughout, with Harry Dunn producing a standout spell of 5-10 from seven overs to break the back of the innings.

He was well supported by James Allen (2-21), along with wickets from Giorgio Rigali and Darryl Rebbetts, as Worthing restricted the hosts to a manageable total.

In reply, Worthing’s chase was built on a composed and disciplined effort. Oliver Kaye top scored with 29, while Darryl Rebbetts anchored the innings with a crucial unbeaten 28 to guide the side home. Contributions from Nicholas Ballamy (17) and others ensured Worthing reached their target with wickets in hand, securing a vital win that confirmed their Division 2 status and capped off the season on a high.

Captain Ballamy said: “This was an important result for Worthing, with Division 2 status a fair reflection of a season that has shown plenty of promise from a young and developing side. The team will now look to build on the progress made this year and aim to compete more consistently next season, with ambitions of pushing towards promotion.

“The club will also be going through a number of improvements over the winter period, including upgrades to the clubhouse and both cricket squares at Manor Sports Ground being re-laid to improve playing conditions ahead of next season, as Worthing look to attract more senior cricketers to the club.”
