Croquet players love new courts - and want other to try them

Members of West Wittering Croquet Club played their first monthly competition on their newly-refurbished courts (pictured).

The club will hold an open day at their courts in Elms Lane, West Wittering (next to the cricket club) on bank holiday Monday, May 7, from 2pm to 5pm, when anybody interested in joining, whether experienced or novice, will be welcome for a chat, a game and some refreshments. Members of the club decided their uneven courts were inadequate for the desired standard of play so they were dug up, levelled and re-turfed, a daunting prospect which would cost more than the club’s 43 members could afford.

However, after obtaining donations from the Woodger Trust, Chichester District Council, the Croquet Association and South East Croquet Federation and adding substantial funding themselves, they took the plunge and contracted the work, which was done during the winter. Now the club have two competition standard courts and are welcoming new members.
