CUP THRILLER ENDS IN DESPAIR FOR GOLDS

IT TOOK 40 penalties '” a FA Cup shoot-out and European record '” before Littlehampton finally bowed out of the FA Cup last Wednesday away to Tunbridge Wells.

The World record for the highest number of penalties in a shoot-out was 48 when KK Palace beat Civics 17-16 in a Nambian Cup first-round match,

Twice, Golds had spot-kicks to win the tie but Wells keeper John Whitehouse was on inspired form, as he was during the 120 minutes, when he had saved one of two penalties Golds were awarded in normal time.

The previous FA Cup penalty record had been 24 when Macclesfield Town defeated Forest Green Rovers 11-10 in a first-round proper tie in 2001.
