Davis stuns Scot to reach quarters

Snooker star Mark Davis chalked up one of the best victories of his career on Thursday morning.

The St Leonards cueman beat world number five Stephen Maguire 5-3 in the last 16 of the Shanghai Masters.

"Stephen made the bigger breaks, I needed two or three chances to win frames, although I didn't seem to miss that much," said Davis, who has been in the best form of his life over the past 18 months and is even pushing for a place in the top 16.

Davis, the world no.20, trailed 2-1 and 3-2 before reeling off three successive frames - with a top run of 53 - to set up a quarter-final against Jamie Burnett on Friday.

It means that the 38-year-old, who won the last two frames to edge out Marco Fu in round one, has matched his best ever ranking event performance.

It will be his third appearance in a ranking event quarter-final and first since the 2001 Scottish Open. Burnett is also through to the last eight for the third time, although his most recent quarter-final was in the 1998 Grand Prix.

Return here Friday lunchtime to find out how Davis gets on.
