Decathlon delight for Moore at Bedford

JAMIE MOORE shone at the English combined events championships in Bedford.

He was competing in the under-20 age group and on day one he recorded a number of personal-best performances – a long jump of 5.96m followed by three throws in the shot putt better than his previous record, with a best of 10.64m, and a new record in the 400m of 52.32sec despite the heat and strong wind.

On day two he achieved a new personal best of 4.10m in the pole vault, giving him the qualifying height for the English schools championships.

Overall the Chichester Runners teenager finished a very creditable seventh in the championships with a new personal-best 5,663 points.

That was in only his fourth decathlon and his first of the season.

In the same event, Charlie Roe lined up for his first senior decathlon, having just emerged from the under-20 ranks.

Despite not finishing in the overall results having been adjudged to have run out of his lane in the 400m, Roe posted four personal bests from the other nine events.

He followed a 6.77m long jump with new marks in all three throws with 10.98m in the shot, 30.55m in the discus and 46.48 in the javelin.

Roe is confident he can make a mark on the senior and under-23 decathlon scene this summer.
