Dominant Davis qualifies for World Seniors

Snooker star Mark Davis was in dominant form as he booked his place in the World Seniors Championship.

The St Leonards cueman won four matches in the qualifiers over the past two days without dropping a frame and conceded just three points in the final two rounds.

Davis started out with a 2-0 win over Jason Weston before achieving an identical result against Tony Knowles, sealing victory with a break of 88. He made it a hat-trick of wins yesterday (Monday) by blitzing Scottish player John Rea for the loss of just two points with runs of 83 and 85.

The world number 23 returned today in similar form, dropping just one point in seeing off Gary Wilkinson and knocking in a break of 80 in frame two.

Davis will go forward to contest the 16-man event proper in Preston at the end of January when matches will again be played over the best of three frames. Other players to have qualified so far include Dominic Dale, Robert Milkins, Anthony Hamilton and Tony Drago.

Davis’s success in the World Seniors Qualifiers went some way to atoning for the disappointment of losing in round one of the German Masters Qualifiers last Friday.

The 43-year-old lost 5-4 to world number 89 Ross Muir. Davis trailed 3-0 and 4-1 before gallantly clawing his way back to 4-4 aided by a 56 break in frame six. Scottish player Muir edged the decider 60-52.

Bexhill-based Jimmy Robertson was beaten in the second and final round of the qualifiers for the same event.

World number 38 Robertson had to come from 4-3 down to edge out 109th-ranked Weston in round one thanks largely to a pair of 53 breaks in the final two frames. He’d earlier made a 67 in frame four.

Robertson went down 5-3, however, at the hands of 29th-ranked Ali Carter on Sunday. The opening four frames were shared, Robertson fashioning a run of 52 in the second, before Carter won three of the remaining four to go through.
