Egerton bowlers star for Sussex

EGERTON Park players were involved in a memorable Liberty Bowls Trophy win for Sussex against Worcestershire on Saturday.

The Sussex team powered to a 140-93 success to set up a quarter-final tie with Durham on January 17. The last time the county reached the last eight was in 1977.

All the Egerton players performed creditably with Peter Gunston cementing his place in the side with another good showing at skip as his team enjoyed a 23-14 victory. Club-mate Charles Wright also excelled leading for Derek Dyer in a 28-13 win over international Dean Hemmings.

Steve Sands was involved in his third win in as many games when he played number two to Dave Ovett in a 19-15 triumph. Steve Nevard was on a losing rink but should have done enough to retain his place against Durham.

The final Egerton player was 19-year-old Kevin Carrie who could consider himself unfortunate to lose his place after the Bucks game, which Sussex won 114-98, but will be very much in the selectors' thoughts when they pick the team for the next round.

Wright said: "I can't remember a better Sussex performance during my time playing indoors for the county. Durham will be a tough nut but Worcestershire reached the semis last year and we beat them easily, so who knows? The atmosphere in the team is sound and everyone plays for the team and not themselves."
