ENGLAND CALL UP FOR WORTHING BOYS

TWO JUNIOR sportmen are celebrating selection to play for their country at age-group level for the first time next month. Worthing golfer Darren Renwick will debut for England Under-16s against Scotland at Woodhall Spa and Goring badminton player Robert Tring will line-up for England Under-13s in Denmark.

Renwick is making history as the first Sussex boy to play for England Under-16s as a 14-year-old. He will not be 15 until February 1. Behind Ben Evans (Rye) and Allie Turner (Bognor), both in 2001, Renwick is only the third from Sussex ever to be selected.

He is in the team of 10 to face the Scots on October 3, having this summer finished second in the Scottish Open Under-14 Championship, then fifth in the Under-16s, both at Ralston, Glasgow. He also led the English Under-16 Championship at Dudsbury until the 59th of the 72 holes before finishing fourth.

The Under-16 England team was established less than 25 years ago '” a period after Worthing man John Wilson became Sussex junior team manager. Appointed since as the English Golf Union's junior delegate for Sussex and Kent, Wilson will be in charge of England Under-16 boys when they play England Under-18 girls at Piltdown on October 10. Renwick is already a member of Wilson's top Sussex and Kent squad, who are selected on their potential to become Under-18 internationals.

Darren Renwick, who plays off a handicap of one, explained: "I'd set myself the target of being selected for the match against the girls, but not the one against Scotland. I'd begun breaking par in competition at the end of last year.

"I've been playing for six years and the challenge is to keep improving. The special thing about golf is every game's different, and every course, and how they are set up.

"I practice three weekdays out of five after school (Sion] and I play both weekend days. I'm particularly working on my swing and my golf from within 100 yards of the flag."

Wilson comments: "Darren is quite calm and thinks about his golf. He just now needs experience and he's still got to grow and adjust to the physical changes of that."

Robert Tring, at just 12, has already moved on from local club badminton with Worthing Juniors and Littlehampton to the World Class Start coaching scheme at Burgess Hill's Triangle. A year into this, he is the only Sussex 12-year-old in a group of four players on this elite scheme.

He practices and trains under Sussex coach Wendy Adams on Monday evenings after his day at Durrington High School. He was selected for the England Under-13 squad this summer and after finishing sixth in a top tournament at High Wycombe at the weekend, he was named in the team of eight boys and eight girls to go to Denmark.

There, England will play at Hillerode in a tournament on October 9&10, then play Denmark on October 11 in singles, boys and girls doubles and mixed.

Robert is the son of Victoria Tring, once a Sussex Under-13 player herself but a mother who admits she cannot handle the stress of watching him play. Darren Renwick is the son of former England indoor bowls international and twice outdoor EBA Finals qualifier, Keith Renwick.
