First loss knocks Saxons off top

South Saxons were knocked off the top of the table after suffering their first defeat of the season.

Saxons conceded twice in the last five minutes to lose 5-4 away to Penguin in a see-saw South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One encounter on Saturday.

Third-placed Penguin twice went ahead during the first half, but Saxons were back on level terms by half time with captain Paddy Cornish scoring the first equaliser and Toby Reed netting the second.

Dan Burnett put Saxons 3-2 ahead and although Penguin restored parity, Jim Towers made it 4-3 to visitors. It was to count for nothing, however, as those two late goals meant Saxons returned home empty-handed.

George Eldridge, pictured, was Saxons’ man of the match. A full report will appear in Friday’s Hastings Observer.
