FOOTBALL: County League round-up (March 11)

ARUNDEL Football Club manager Richard Towers is targeting a strong finish to the season after a 1-1 draw at Peacehaven in County League Division 1 on Tuesday evening.

Josh Biggs' cross-shot from an acute angle on 35 minutes gave Arundel the lead before both teams had penalty appeals turned down.

With Mullets 1-0 up and looking likely to get a second goal, Rory Biggs picked up a second yellow card for a foul and became the third Arundel player to be sent off in two games.

Peacehaven then netted the equaliser with 15 minutes to go when the wind took a wide cross straight into the top corner. Despite having their backs to the wall, some fine defending saw Arundel hang on.

Towers said: "In the last 10 minutes, down to 10 men, it was a well-earned point, but before that I was looking for us to get another goal.

"Rory's first booking was harsh, but we've got an awful disciplinary record. It is something we've dealt with internally and made the players aware it's not acceptable. Hopefully, things will change now.

"I've been pleased with our performances recently. We're playing with confidence again and we have the squad to finish strongly.

"In the past few seasons, we have been the top local side and we want to get up there and claim that again."

Arundel's home match with Hailsham on Saturday was postponed owing to a waterlogged pitch.

Clinton More grabbed Wick a last-minute 1-1 draw at Hassocks on Tuesday, also in Division 1.

Stuart Faith had headed Hassocks into the lead early in the second half and they then had several chances to double their lead.

But Wick enjoyed long spells of possession in the last 20 minutes and created opportunities to level. James West shot wide, and Hassocks keeper Jack Simpson saved from Simon Clayton and More, before More got the leveller when the ball fell to him 12 yards out.

Clymping recorded their fifth successive league win on Saturday to move up to seventh in Division 2.

They beat Lancing 3-0 and Clymping player-manager Dominic Di Paola said: "It was a good result on a poor pitch. We've got tough games coming up, which will give us a better idea of where we are. We've not done too badly since Christmas. The form's been pleasing and we just need to keep going. We've now played most of the teams around us and have a massive game on Thursday (tonight) against Littlehampton."

After a tight first half, Clymping moved ahead in the 68th minute through Richy Moss.

They doubled their lead eight minutes later when Aaron Meehan fired home from distance and it became 3-0 on 81 minutes when Richard Ghent squared for Moss to get his second.

CLYMPING: Paice; Stokes, S. Di Paola, D. Di Paola, Biggs; Rayner, Castro, Shelley, Meehan; Moss, Ghent. Subs: Brown (Stokes 75), Gaskin (Moss 80), Miller.

Littlehampton joint boss John Suter was delighted with his side's 5-3 win at Westfield on Saturday on Division 2.

He said: "We played well, on a tough surface. The most important thing was the three points and it's never easy to win at Westfield. The goal they scored just before half-time buoyed them but we kept our composure and it was pleasing."

Golds started well and raced into a three-goal lead by the half-hour mark. Matt Windsor headed them in front with his first goal for the club on 11 minutes, before he added the second 15 minutes later.

Matt Russell soon made it 3-0 but Westfield rallied and had made it 3-2 by the 60th minute. Russell restored the two-goal advantage from a Jerry Manning cross five minutes later but Westfield refused to lie down and made it 4-3. But a Kyle Morris own goal sealed Golds' win.

LITTLEHAMPTON: Gillard; Young, Windsor, McKay, Hazell; Buckett, O'Hagan, Manning, Sayers; Russell, Adedoja. Subs: Peacock (Sayers 72), Lawson (Manning 75), Boutwood (Adedoja 82).
