FOOTBALL: Rebels beat leaders Croydon

WORTHING Football Club closed the gap on Ryman League Division 1 South leaders Croydon Athletic to three points on Saturday (April 3) with a 2-1 win.

Rebels remain third despite second-placed Folkestone's match at Walton & Hersham being postponed.

Jamie Brotherton scored both Worthing goals to move onto 17 goals for the season in an excellent team performance, in which Ryan Adams and David Pitt both made their debuts.

In an excellent game, both sides had chances before Worthing went ahead on 29 minutes. The lively Pitt fed Brett Patton, who found Brotherton and he turned past the last defender before shooting past Croydon keeper Andy Little from 12 yards.

Adams' debut was cut short at half-time owing to a twisted knee, so Glen Woodburn came on at the break.

Worthing keeper Alan Mansfield made an excellent save to deny Gary Noel early in the second period before Worthing went 2-0 ahead on 54 minutes. Luke Denton's long throw was headed on by Stuart Axten and Brotherton flicked the ball home from six yards.

Pitt twice then went close to getting a third before Croydon got a goal back on 64 minutes when Leslie Thompson's attempted cross floated inside the back post.

Croydon then had a spell of pressure and Mansfield made a stunning save from Gareth Roberts before Joe Howe had a shot blocked by Luke Denton.

Rebels' Ben Williamson had a chance to seal the game with six minutes left but his final touch allowed Little to come out and claim the ball when he was through one-on-one.

Despite that, Croydon failed to create an equalising opportunity in the closing stages and Rebels held on for all three points.

WORTHING: Mansfield; Adams, Denton, Axten, Groves; Brotherton, Akehurst, Patton, Johnson; Archibald, Pitt. Subs: Woodburn (Adams 45), Williamson (Pitt 72), Clarke, Greenfield, Woodford. Att: 428.
