FOOTBALL: Things are looking up at Wick - Block

NEW Wick FC boss Gary Block knew there would be no quick fix at the club this season, but after picking up a point against St Francis on Saturday and narrowly losing to Selsey on Tuesday, things are looking up.

Block has brought in a number of new faces to the club, and although he knows they must improve their fitness, he was disappointed not to take more from the games.

Despite sitting second from bottom of County League Division 1, Wick seem to be in much better shape now, than their opening day 5-0 defeat at Crowborough, when they were managerless.

On Tuesday night's game, where they went down 2-1 at Selsey, Block said: "On another day we would have got something out of it, and their second was a 35-yarder – some days they fly over but unfortunately it went in.

"We are nowhere near fit enough at the moment, which has showed in the games. I've got a lot of lads in, some have done pre-season, some haven't.

"We've taken one point from nine but that could have easily been nine from nine. It may take up until Christmas to get up and running properly, but it will happen.

"Things are looking a lot brighter than a couple of weeks ago and the chairman is happy.

"Things take time, though, and it's work in progress. We've got enough quality to stay in the division and we'll be adding to that as well, so I'm confident."

Danny Towers was caught in possession on Tuesday, which allowed Stuart Souter to give Selsey a 14th-minute lead.

Andy Brown then equalised after a well-worked passing move but Selsey hit the winner in one of their few chances after the break from long range.

Wick substitute Tom Baker grabbed a point on Saturday with virtually the last touch of the game. He headed home in the 94th-minute to level things up after Francis Dellows had given St Francis a 42nd-minute lead.

Block said: "We should have won, by four or five on chances, although we lacked that cutting edge. We lack fitness, and tired legs and heads make tired passes, but it was nice to get a deserved point at the end."
