FOOTBALL: Weekly County League round-up

ARUNDEL assistant manager Simon Butler praised his side's second-half performance in their 2-2 draw at East Grinstead in Division 1, after a shocking initial showing left them 1-0 down at the break on Saturday.

Butler said: "We should have been out of the game by half-time. We were awful, but we dominated the second half and could have won it near the end.

"A draw was fair, though, because they had the first half and we had the second.

"I would say it's definitely a point gained because of the desire and attitude we showed."

Ben Burns put Grinstead ahead in just the second minute, but a rejuvenated Mullets equalised in the 64th minute when Matt Huckett picked out Matt Axell, who fired home.

Huckett made it 2-1 three minutes later. He shot home from 18 yards from Dave Hall's pass and, after Scott Tipper headed over, Luke Piscina levelled at 2-2 three minutes from time.

Mullets could have nicked it near the end, but Tipper's one-on-one effort was saved. Mullets were boosted this week by the news that Howard Neighbour has re-signed from Bognor.

Wick bounced back from two consecutive league defeats to progress into the third round of the John O'Hara Cup at troubled Division 2 side Westfield.

The game was played at nearby Hastings United's Pilot Field ground after a fire at the Beaconsfield destroyed Westfield's clubhouse on September 20.

On the pitch, Westfield went ahead in the 30th minute, before Scott Murfin equalised after a solo run.

Phil Turner deflected home George Gaskin's shot and Simon Clayton sealed a 3-1 win by lobbing in Josh Jarvis's pass.

Manager Vic Short said: "We deserved to win and, in the end, it was comfortable, but I think the circumstances made it harder for us.

"Hastings United were wonderful to both teams and the pitch was excellent. We adapted well and I'm pleased."

WICK: Bryant; Beaney, Sharman, Sutcliffe, Torode; Barnard, Turner, Clayton, Swain; S. Murfin, Gaskin. Subs: N. Murfin (Swain 65), Jarvis (Gaskin 75), Biggs (S. Murfin 80).

Rustington manager Pete Matthews was pleased with his side's performance, despite their 3-0 defeat at Redhill in the RUR Cup first round.

Matthews said: "We actually played very well. They're a good side, but I'm not too disappointed because we gave it a go. It bodes well and we're getting key players back now, so results should start going our way soon."

After a goalless first half in which Steve Kirkham and James Bennett had efforts saved, strikes from Jody Ricketts (52 minutes), Chris Hubbard (70) and Lee Radford (81) saw Redhill through.

RUSTINGTON: Yeo; Curtis, Butt, Neal, Green; Bennett, C. Matthews, Morten, Gibbs; Kirkham, Churchill. Subs: Duffy (Matthews 70), Harris (Kirkham 75), Gibbon (Morten 80).

Littlehampton were beaten 2-1 at home by Lancing in Division 2.

Player-manager Gary Young said: "It was definitely a game we should have won, but it was a lack of cutting edge that cost us. We conceded two sloppy goals, which was disappointing."

Rob Partridge and Dan Griffin put Lancing 2-0 up, but Adam Mitchell halved the deficit from a long Craig Stoner clearance in the 65th minute, but Lancers held on.

The spoils were shared between Littlehampton and Southwick in a 1-1 draw in Division 2 last Wednesday night. Nick Green headed in Wickers' opener after just five minutes. They then hit the post and Ryan Walton hit his effort straight at Golds' goalkeeper, Craig Stoner, from six yards out.

After the break, Matt Russell thought he had bagged Littlehampton's equaliser, only for his finish, from Joe Charman's cross, to be ruled out for offside. After the break, Wickers again struck the woodwork before Adam Mitchall did net the equaliser after 65 minutes.

Chris Hazell and Charman again went close for Golds before James Wotherspoon missed a golden opportunity to win it late on for Southwick.

LITTLEHAMPTON v Lancing: Stoner; Ward. McKay, Hazell, Young; Sayers, Hudson, White, Peacock; Russell, Mitchell. Subs: Boutwood (Sayers 70), Murray (Peacock 78), Tavor, Askew.

Clymping crashed out of the Sussex Senior Cup on Saturday in a 3-1 home defeat against Division 1 side Chichester City.

After an even first half hour, the deadlock was broken on 33 minutes when City's James Archer latched onto a blocked effort and blasted the ball home from 10 yards. Clymping's best effort came just before half-time when Joe Shelley's goal-bound effort was tipped over the bar by Robert Shay.

Clymping threw everything they had at their opponents after the break and their strong pressure paid off when the unmarked Shelley headed home an Aaron Meehan corner on 53 minutes.

Chichester regained the lead with 20 minutes left, when Lee Mullen found the top corner from 25 yards, and Joe Briggs made the game safe with a free kick late on.
