FOOTBALL: WILSON STRIKES TWICE TO END GOAL FAMINE

Dr Martens League Cup First roundGrantham Town 3, Histon 1

Stuart Wilson finally broke his Diego Forlan-like goal drought in the same week the Manchester United striker ended his, to score his first competitive goal of the season and fire Grantham into the second round of the Dr Martens League Cup on Tuesday.

And he went one better by hammering in a second.

Grantham made eight changes from their FA Cup side.

But it took further second-half changes to find the winning formula, as Grantham came back from a goal down.

Histon, second in the Eastern Division, gained a first-half edge over their Premier rivals, after Danny George had gone closest for Grantham with a cross-shot the keeper palmed away.

Histon pressed midway through the half and brought Mario Ziccardi into fine saving action, tipping over a close-range header from Ian Cambridge.

But it was short respite. The striker took the flag-kick himself and Kennedy rose to head Histon into the lead.

Jon Hawley cleared off the line as Histon pressed again, and minutes later Ziccardi made a great save at Rowe's feet as the striker ghosted beyond the Grantham defence.

Histon began the second half on the attack and again Ziccardi had to be at his best to turn a fierce effort from Munns over the bar.

Grantham had brought on Jamie Clarke for the second half and he began to make his presence felt, as did Dave Gilbert, back after a long lay-off.

On the hour Clarke latched on to the ball, beat his man and raced on to hit a low shot past the keeper.

Ian Wilkins and Lee Marshall came on and Grantham moved up a gear to take the lead on 70 minutes.

Wilson fired in a 20yd shot from the right of the area beat the keeper at his near post.

Six minutes later he topped it with a fierce shot from outside the area.
