FOOTBALL: Young hopes for successful finish

LITTLEHAMPTON Football Club joint manager Gary Young is hoping to end his reign with a trophy on Good Friday.

Golds take on Loxwood in the Division 2 Cup final at Wick, with a 3pm kick-off, and it will be Young's last chance to win some silverware as he is stepping down as manager at the end of the season.

He said: "I'm really looking forward to the game and it would be lovely to win it.

"I've made the decision to step down at the end of the season owing to work and family reasons, so it would be nice to finish my tenure with a trophy."

Young still intends to play for Golds next season, though, and has not ruled out a return to management further down the line: "I'll probably get back into management in the future, when my children are older, but I'm still going to play.

"I've been manager for the last two and a bit years, and I'll still help out around the club."

Young has enjoyed working with joint boss John Suter this year, and said: "It's gone well but it took a while to get the right team. If it was based on the second half of the season, we'd be chasing promotion."

On Loxwood, who have failed to win in four games, but are still fourth, Young said: "For a team at the top, it's probably a good time to play them.

"But maybe they've had one eye on the final and they'll be looking to resurrect their season on Friday.

"We'll need the spine of our team, Craig Stoner, Niall O'Hagan and Matt Russell to perform and, if the rest of the team play as we know they can, we'll be confident of getting a result."

Matt Windsor is cup-tied, having played in the competition for East Preston, but Golds are otherwise full-strength.

Golds reached the final with wins over Rustington (4-3), Little Common (2-1) and Clymping (3-0). Loxwood progressed with victories over Southwick (2-1), Lancing (1-0) and Rye (2-0).
