A brilliant curtain raiser as Anvils get the perfect start

Anymore games like this and the Anvils hierarchy will be forced to put up ‘House Full’ notices, as this opening game of the season turned out to be a brilliant curtain raiser for the new campaign, a game that tugged at the heartstrings of both players and spectators alike.

Invicta opened proceedings with Stuart King having the first pop on 2 mins, and again just after with a shot well taken by keeper Kieran Thorp. Next came Dane Luchford shooting into the side netting, and for the Anvils Liam Wright tested Invicta keeper Rob French.

But that was it in the first half for the Anvils as Invicta tightened the screw... and went ahead on 34 when King took a Josh Vincent pass and drove the ball home.

The Anvils were becoming just bit part actors in this farce as the visitors continued to run the show, the only suprise was the half time scoreline of 0-1.

After no doubt a paint-peeling job in the Anvils dressing room, the homesters received yet another setback just two minutes into the second half, when Jake Beecroft took advantage of slack defending to rifle home the visitors second. This looked to be game over for the Anvils, but inspired substitutions on the home bench turned the game on its head, and slowly but surely they grafted their way back into the game.

And on 66 the speedy Wright took advantage of a long ball down the middle to lob keeper French for the Anvil opener.

With under half hour ago one sensed optimism, and with Wright leading the way with a corner on 77 – headed home by centre back Chris Breach – Invicta were by now rocking against these incessant Anvil attacks.

And the spoils were finally delivered on 85 when the irrepressible Wright, far out on the right, fired in a rocket from 30 yards that left keeper French transfixed as the ball arrowed into the top corner to give the homesters the points in a game that defied logic but was most welcome.
