'A different feeling' - Crawley Town boss hopes last-gasp equaliser can spur his side on at Oldham

Crawley Town boss Scott Lindsey is hopeful the buoyant mood created by their last-gasp equaliser against Chesterfield can spur his side on when they face Oldham Athletic this Saturday.

Captain Jay Williams scored with the last touch of the game to salvage a draw, earning the Reds another point against a side at the top end of League Two.

Earlier that week, Lindsey’s men held third-placed MK Dons to a goalless draw at Stadium MK.

The Reds’ manager revealed that Spireites’ boss Paul Cook had a very different feeling to the elation in the home dressing room after the match.

“I think it's the same as the support when you score later on in a game,” he said. “It's a different feeling in the dressing room. It doesn't feel like a loss when you score late on and draw the game.

“Whereas, speaking to Paul Cook after the game, he felt like he'd lost the game because we'd scored so late and then they had probably been one nil [up] for quite a long period of time. He had a bit of banter with me in my office after.

“My daughter was in there. It was my daughter's birthday the next day, and it was Paul Cook's birthday the next day as well. They shared the same birthday and Paul Cook said: ‘Happy birthday. It's my birthday too, but your dad's just gone and ruined that.”

The point may well prove to be a crucial moment in Crawley’s battle to avoid relegation, with another tricky task on the road next at Boundary Park this weekend.

Lindsey said: “I know, of course, we've come away with the exact same points, but it is that feeling and the feeling around the place is really positive because of that late goal.

“Listen, that might end up being the goal that saves our season - hopefully not. Hopefully, we have more, and we're not one goal away from staying up. Hopefully we’re more than that, but you never know, and that was a really important goal.”

The Reds remain in 21st-place in the table and precariously hover just two points above the relegation zone – a position they have occupied for much of this campaign.

Saturday’s opponents Oldham are faring better in 15th and have won their last two matches without conceding.
