Advantage Steyning Town in the SCFL title race – as Lancing give them helping hand

Steyning Town took another step towards the SCFL Premier Division title on Saturday – then got a helping hand from near neighbours Lancing on Tuesday night.

Michael Hamm’s side won 5-0 at Shoreham on Saturday to stay three points clear of Haywards Heath Town at the top.

Then on Tuesday night, Heath played their game in hand at Lancing and were surprisingly beaten 2-1, giving the Barrowmen a three-point league lead with five games to go.

Ollie Rawlins gave the Barrowmen the lead at Middle Road but they had to be patient. Tad Bromage got the second as the game entered its final 15 minutes and Alex Brewer (2) scored in the final ten minutes.

Steyning boss Michael Hamm said: “We went into the game with a number of players missing but are fortunate to have a strong squad.

“Ollie Rawlins scored on his debut having joined from Welling.

“It wasn’t one of our finest performances – we controlled the game but lacked a bit of cutting edge.”

Shoreham boss Connor Cox said: “We battled against a good side. We made a mistake for the first goal then limited their opportunities until the last 15 minutes of the second half, in which we conceded late goals trying to go for it.”

On Tuesday night Steyning beat Newhaven 2-0 to reach the Peter Bentey Cup final.

They now host Bexhill on Saturday and go to Haywards Heath on Easter Monday.

Shoreham, four points adrift at the bottom, are at Wick on Saturday and host Varndeanians on Monday.
