Arundel secure first league win

ARUNDEL Football Club secured their first County League Division 1 victory of the season last night (Wednesday) and in doing so lifted themselves off the bottom of the table.

Mullets won 3-1 away at Peacehaven after what chairman and caretaker manager Bob Marchant described as an outstanding display.

The results sees Mullets leapfrog Chichester at the foot of the table and they are hoping the win will kick-start their season.

Marchant said: “They were brilliant last night, absolutely brilliant. We changed a few things round and everyone put in 200 per cent and got the rewards for it.

“That lifts us above Chi now as well which was a bit of an added bonus.

“We were better for the whole 90 minutes, which is good as we have performed for 45s in recent games, but either the first or second half. They got it together for the whole game last night and were outstanding, all of them.

“A few people have been saying things about it won’t work with not having a manager at the moment, but I knew it would only be a matter of time.”

Howard Neighbour put Arundel ahead on 36 minutes as he finished a nodded down ball from Scott Tipper after a fine delivery into the box.

Dave Walker headed Mullets two ahead four minutes later as he rose for a corner at the far post to give them a cushion going into half-time.

Top-scorer Tipper then got in on the act midway through the second half as he stabbed home his 18th goal of the season after a melee in the area.

Peacehaven were reduced 10 men with 10 minutes remaining as Ashley Rees saw red for dissent, and although Rob O’Toole netted a consolation for the home side late on it didn’t dampen Marchant’s mood.

He added: “A few of the guys were moaning about not keeping a clean sheet, but I wasn’t too bothered, although that shows the mentality they have.

“A mention goes to Dave Hall as well. He has really stepped up and is taking training and helping me out no end. He has been brilliant and should take a bit of credit for bringing the younger guys in as well.

“He has been a credit to himself and this club.”
