Block furious after Wick’s defeat

WICK Football Club manager Gary Block slammed his team’s “lack of guts and bottle” after they crashed to a 3-0 defeat at impressive Hassocks in County League Division 1 on Saturday.

A furious Block claimed he feels his players believe their league status is secure, and that they lacked desire in key areas as they crashed to third-placed Hassocks, who finished the game with 10 men.

The result leaves Wick fifth from bottom, nine points above the relegation zone, but Block believes they still have not sealed their saftey in the top division and said: “It was very disappointing and a bad day at the office for us. There was a lack of guts and bottle, everything we did was half-hearted and I think our players think we’re safe.

“We’ve still got work to do, there was a lack of desire and we gifted them each one of their goals. We lost Danny Towers early on to a broken collarbone, which is a blow for us, but we made too many poor mistakes and Hassocks fully deserved it.

“When you don’t put the effort in and shirk responsibilities you get what you deserve, nothing in our case.”

Block’s temper would not have been helped by Hassocks’ 39th-minute opener, when Anthony Hibbert strolled in to the penalty area and headed home, completely unmarked, from eight yards.

Dan Smith capitalised on sloppy midfield play to make it 2-0 on 70 minutes, and despite the sending off of Hassocks’ Daniel Barnard for a second booking, Spencer Slaughter profited from what Block described as “schoolboy football” to make it 3-0 in injury-time.
