The Seagulls are already without the likes of Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma, Georginio and Jack Hinshelwood but now face a lengthy period without full back Mats Wieffer.

The Dutchman sustained a knee injury at Chelsea and will now be out until after the international.

Wieffer was hit in the face by the ball during the topsy turvy 4-3 loss at Stamford Bridge and twisted his leg and knee awkwardly as he fell to the ground.

“He fell to the ground holding his face and then hurt knee. It was like a boxer injuring his knee after being punched in the face,” was head coach Fabian Hurzeler’s assessment ahead of Saturday’s clash against Leeds United.

Minteh (leg), Mitoma (hamstring), Georginio and Hinshelwood are all expected to be out until the next international break, which starts for Brighton after their fixture against arsenal on September 19.

The Seagulls resume top flight action on October 10 at Sunderland.

Leeds a stern test

So far this term, Brighton have enjoyed a 4-0 home win against Aston and then lost 4-3 at Chelsea. Leeds United, who beat Nottingham Forest and then drew against Brentford, will be a stern test for the injury hit Seagulls.

Hurzler said: “They just continue the performances of last season.

“So very intense team, very aggressive. Clear style of play. They try to attack the box. A lot of players, they show great team effort. So, yeah, overall, a very difficult team to beat.

“[Daniel] Farke does a brilliant job there and besides that, they have individual quality.

“They have good players who ask for the ball a lot of times. They have Ethan Ampadu who's definitely a key player for them.

“They have Anton Stach in the midfield, Tanaka, a few players who always want to have the ball. Who want to be involved in the game.

“They have Noah Okafor, a good one-against-one player. Calvert Lewin is a great striker. Aronsson. So I think they have really, really good balance.

“They have a really, really good team and a big challenge for us.”
