Brighton transfer news: Defender predicts 'big summer' for himself, Pundit calls out transfer error involving Albion star

Brighton defender Leo Ostigard has admitted that he is expecting a “big summer” with regards to his future on the south coast.

The 21-year-old is currently out on loan at Championship side Coventry City, where he has made 36 appearances across all competitions, scoring twice.

His performances this term have earned him a call-up to Norway’s senior squad, although he is still waiting to make his international debut.

Ostigard is out of contract with Brighton this summer, however, and he has spoken candidly about the uncertainty he could be facing in the coming months.

Discussing the matter with the Coventry Telegraph, he said: “It will be a big summer for me.

“I don’t want to stress about it, just see what’s coming up.

“I need to take a choice and as I have always said, I need to play. I am not going to risk my career to sit on the bench so that’s my main thing as a football player.

“So I want to play for a team where I can play rather than sit on the bench for a better team, so that’s my opinion on being a footballer, and that will be my main thing to think about.”

With the likes of Lewis Dunk, Ben White, and Adam Webster ahead of him in the pecking order at his parent club, opportunities could be limited for Ostigard, who seems intent on seeking out first team minutes one way or another.

Elsewhere, Rio Ferdinand has lamented Manchester United’s decision to part company with Brighton striker Danny Welbeck.

The forward left his boyhood club to join Arsenal in 2014, and spent a spell with Watford before signing for Albion last year.

Since then, he has scored four goals for the Seagulls, and Ferdinand believes that he should have been given longer at Old Trafford.

Speaking to the FIVE Youtube channel, he said:

“I thought we got rid of good people in [Javier] Hernandez, Welbeck and Rafael,” Ferdinand told the FIVE YouTube channel. “They were good United people with character.

“They wanted to play for Manchester United and knew what it meant – they wanted to win and they were part of that previous era that knew how to win.

“Welbeck epitomised everything about Man Utd, he was hard-working and he understood what it meant to be a United player.

“He had quality, he could come in from being on the bench and score. He knew what it meant to be a squad player as well. When he was there to start, he produced the goods.

“I used to judge players by how hard they were to train again and he was hard to play against. People would always say he was a nightmare to play against because he doesn’t stop moving, he receives the ball well, he can run behind, he’s quick, he’s got everything.

“Maybe his finishing wasn’t as clean as some others to make him an elite, elite player, but he was giving you enough to stay here. He had more than enough.

“Danny Welbeck was the best striker on the pitch yesterday with his performance. He should never have been allowed to leave United. When fit, I’d take him above loads and loads of players."
