Brighton make fresh Yankuba Minteh transfer claim after multiple bids from Liverpool

Brighton vs Leeds United in the Premier League from the Amex Stadium

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler has challenged Yankuba Minteh to help Brighton succeed before earning a dream move.

Winger Minteh, who is currently injured, was linked with Liverpool during the summer transfer window.

The Reds made two bids of £50m and then £60m for the Gambian flyer but both were rejected by the Seagulls.

“ Yes, definitely,” said Hurzeler when asked if Minteh is fully committed to Brighton.

“He wears the Brighton colours. He wears the Brighton badge. He has been a part of the squad for two years now and achieved great things together with the boys.

“So it's also about him now to commit because in the end, we always say we want to be successful as a club, but then you can shine as individuals.

“That’s what we proved in the past. If we achieve things together, then the attention will come to the individual players, and this will be the case also this season.

“If the whole team is successful and the individual shine, then Yankuba will get a lot of attention again, and then he can maybe fulfill his dream in the next transfer window.

“But now it's of course also up to us to give him the chance to do good rehab, to be again part of this group, but also up to him to perform at the highest level because we know that Yankuba can be one of the best players.

“He can have a big impact on our performance on the pitch. But in the end it's a team sport and in the end everyone needs to be on his highest level so that we can be successful as a team and then the individual will benefit from it. “

Hurzeler’s ‘Baby Rodri’

Hurzeler also hopes new signing Chema Andres can one day live up to comparisons with Spain World Cup winner Rodri.

The 21-year-old defensive midfielder joined from German club Stuttgart on deadline day for a reported £15.5million and has been dubbed “Baby Rodri”.

Spain Under-21 international Andres, a former Real Madrid player, could make his debut in Saturday’s Premier League game at home to Leeds but fellow new arrival Femi Azeez will miss out with a minor injury sustained with previous club Millwall.

“Rodri is one of the best players in the world so it’s a long journey, but we will help him to get there and he will help himself because he has a great character, he has this motivation of wanting to improve every day,” Hurzeler told a press conference.

“You can really feel that he’s very ambitious, and therefore I can understand this comparison but it’s still a long way to go. Hopefully he can get there one day – it would be a big one for us.”

Wieffer out

Mats Wieffer has been ruled out of Brighton’s next four matches with a bizarre knee injury. The utility player sustained the damage after he was struck in the face by the ball during Sunday’s 4-3 defeat at Chelsea.

Kaoru Mitoma and Jackhinshelwood are also sidelined.
