Brighton transfer news: Albion most likely destination for 96-cap international

Eyebrows were raised across the Premier League when news broke that Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan had signed for Arsenal last week.

The Australian international has joined the Gunners on a loan deal until the end of the season after starting the season as Graham Potter’s number one on the south coast and subsequently falling a long way down the pecking order.

Since then, the Seagulls have tried a number of different options between the sticks, with Robert Sanchez now looking like the de facto number one, and Christian Walton and Jason Steele both making appearances in recent FA Cup victories.

But according to a fresh report, Albion could be in line to strengthen their options in goal.

As per Marca, Manchester United are looking to offload Sergio Romero before the transfer deadline, and they believe that Brighton is his most likely destination.

The 33-year-old has not been registered as part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad for the remainder of the season, and it is understood that talks are ongoing about him potentially terminating his contract at Old Trafford, with both David De Gea and Dean Henderson ahead of him in the pecking order.

This isn't the first time that Brighton have been linked with the Argentine, with the Daily Mail suggesting that Potter’s men could make a move as far back as the turn of the year.

Romero may be out of favour with United, but he is also a 96-cap international, with vast experience and plenty of quality.

Last season, for instance, he conceded a total of 1.03 goals than he was expected to for United, as per Wyscout.

As a point of reference, Ryan conceded 4.5 more than he was expected to across his 1.073 before being dropped earlier this season.

Away from the Amex, Sky Sports report that Crystal Palace are set to keep hold of Belgian striker Christian Benteke.

The 30-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and could leave the club for free in the summer if he stays put this month.

West Brom manager Sam Allardyce had previously confirmed that he would be interested in signing the ex-Liverpool man.
